Papa Time

One papa, five children, and the talks they have together.

Let this late night chat with Sophie be a warning to us all. Don't do podcasts when you're tired and slapstick.

This is a special edition of the Papa Time podcast, because it's Papa Free, tonight! We have a {contested} guest host... Uncle Jacob, who discussed some important topics with the niblings.

Topics include owls, submarine cars, magical cleaning powers, literary works, and a species of reptilian humanoids who are currently running the world.

The list of literature discussed on this episode consists of many of our standard favorites:

The Harry Potter Series by JK Rowling

The Complete Wreck (A Series of Unfortunate Events) by Lemony Snicket

All The Wrong Questions by Lemony Snicket

Tonight we're talking with Sophie, and a wonderful, drenching spring rain is pouring down. We're so very grateful this week - for God's hand of protection and healing on our precious Aunt Amber, and we're so thankful for a brand new baby boy in our extended family. We're thankful for a great library in our little town, too. A library where the librarian actually suggests that you bring your kid in squeaky shoes - because honestly, that's what happened.

It's probably time to share Kinsley's favorite book about cryptids, which is Tales of the Cryptids.

It's safe to say that Plutarch's Lives is not one of Kinsley's favorites, but she and Sophie are both good sports about wading through it anyway.

Haliburton's Complete Book of Marvels was not an inexpensive book, but it has been a huge hit in our house, and therefore was a very worthwhile purchase for our family library.

In case you wonder about the talk of beating one's pate with a good stout cudgel - we have been reading The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood together. It has been a surprisingly big hit amongst the children.

Other books mentioned in this episode:

The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling - Uncle Zion gave the family a copy of this book illustrated by Robert Ingpen. Ingpen's illustrations are absolutely some of the best we've ever had in a family read aloud. We're huge fans.

The TinTin Series by Herge (An absolute must have!)

Oops, we meant to get this out last Thursday but life got the better of us. Please excuse the fidgeting and the fussing in the background. Violet gets jealous of the Papa Times that her siblings are having.

We hope you enjoy this (late) conversation with Miss Gillian!

Gillian has gotten pretty adept at reading just recently. But whether she is reading to herself or being read to by some of her older siblings, some of her favorite books are from the Little House Picture Book Series.

Calico Critters are the bomb. Everyone needs Calico Critters.

Tonight you get to hear a very typical conversation with Violet. She hates baths. Her friend Evy likes baths, so Violet always volunteers her good buddy to take a bath instead.

We have tried to influence her through literature, and her most recent favorite book is helping us make a bit of headway. Check out Harry The Dirty Dog. It was a favorite book from Mama's childhood, as well.

Tonight Truxton and Papa discuss the minotaur, Tasmanian tigers, dangerous explorations and Bigfoot.

Everyone in our family is a big fan of Hank the Cowdog (LINK HERE). The kids love both the books and the audio, but the narrator for the audio is pretty great.

By the way, the links we share in our show notes are generally our affiliate links. We promise not to link up to something that we don't actually use and love. If you do use our affiliate link, there's no additional cost to you, and Amazon gives us a bit off the top which helps negate the costs of hosting a podcast.

Here is the video that Truxton mentioned of a Tasmanian tiger (Thylacine). It was taken in 1933 at Hobart Zoo in Australia.

Tonight Papa is chatting with Sophie.

You may notice that several of our kids have asked a "Would You Rather" question. These are generally inspired by a card game that we keep in the car. It provides endless entertainment for road trips of any length along with lots of very silly conversation. Check it out using our affiliate link { Would You Rather } - it's perfect for summer road trips!

Sophie made us an entire gallon of Perfect Iced Coffee the other day. She used Pioneer Woman's recipe, so you know it was good. We use Better Stevia Extract at our house. It isn't the least bit bitter.

Tonight we talked a lot about pets and books.

Kinsley is especially thankful for Goodbye Mr Chips, today.

Papa is reading Stalking The Wild Asparagus and The Travels of Marco Polo.
